A story to hear

Kevin Joseph Kelley kicks off the Cleveland Cabaret Project's season with his show An Experience is Not a Lifestyle Choice at Star Bar and Restaurant in Cleveland's Playhouse Square.

Kelley, star of more shows than even he can count, took part in the 2005 Cabaret Sampler last April, and now returns to walk the boards once more.

Some may know him from playing Jeffrey in Craig Lucas' The Dying Gaul at the Beck Center, or from his role as Chuckie, Lea DeLaria's sidekick in the film Edge of Seventeen.

Theater insiders may even have attended one of his Kevin Kelleyoke karaoke nights in Lakewood.

Now, however, those who have yet to see this serio-comic dynamo in action have two more chances, at 9 pm and 10:30 pm on Saturday, November 19. "I take the audience on a journey from the first time

I decided to drive on the other side of the road, as well

as looking at the relationships I've had with men," Kelley says. "Reflections like these are not for the faint of heart, but if the eleven o'clock numbers are, this is the story to hear!"

The Cabaret Project's producer, Lora Workman, is less subdued in her praise of Kelley's performance.

"This is unabashed entertainment," she notes, "the kind best enjoyed with friends over a drink or two, while a cabaret performer belts ballads and bats double-entendres from the stage." Star Bar and Restaurant is at 1515 Euclid Avenue. Call 216-621-8777 for table reservations.

seen in a very different role in Sam Mendez's breathtaking war film Jarhead, as a soldier trying to find himself through the lens of the first Gulf War.

Sarsgaard is an actor of great versatility and depth.

In The Dying Gaul he turns in his most accomplished and nuanced role. Sarsgaard can be touchingly vulnerable and devastatingly manipulative within seconds and each moment always rings true. He is also not afraid to embrace the sexual and here he turns in work that is raw and exposed. The scene where sex with Jeffrey causes Robert to break down allows Sarsgaard to create a cinematic moment

that may be unrivaled in its bravery and honesty.

Together the three actors create sparks and synergy that makes up for the flaws in Lucas' directorial debut. There are many parts of the film that are strongly directed, but the lax ones create an uneven film. There is a lot of style in Lucas' approach, but sometimes he seems to be going for style over substance, subverting the true power of the story he is trying to tell.

The film is definitely worth watching, especially for the acting trio on display here. One only wishes that the film had lived up to its entire potential.

Early on, Jeffrey says to Robert, "No one goes to the movies to have a bad time." The Dying Gaul is not a bad time. But it could have been a really good time with some story rewrites and stronger, more cohesive directing.
